Kromfohrlanders in the United States of America

Mr. Felix answers a few questions about North American Kromfohrlanders
PictureGo ahead- ask me!
How many Kromfohrlanders are in the USA?
109 documented Kromfohrlanders
are recorded with AKC's  Foundation Stock  System  and  are   the  ONLY ones that will  be officially  recorded in breed history with  AKC, thus far.

6 unrecorded Kromis (shown at the bottom of this page) have  come to North America and  though we have done  extensive tracking  down  of  each and  every  one  of  these  historic  Kromis   and  contacted their owners, sadly, they have  thus   failed  to   provide  information
that would make their  dogs part of officially recorded Kromi history
in America. If you owned one of these dogs, please contact us.

97 of these documented Kromis are alive as of 2020.

What needs to be done to be recognized by American Kennel Club (AKC)?

The Kromi is currently in the Foundation Stock class with AKC. The next step is Miscellaneous Class.

Eligibility to request Miscellaneous Class Status requires:

  • Parent Club designated to represent the breed
  • A breed entering the FSS® based upon being an established breed in a foreign registry must have reached full recognition status
  • The Club has balloted the membership to seek AKC recognition
  • Breed Standard reviewed to meet AKC Breed Standard Guidelines
  • Minimum of 150 dogs enrolled with three-generation pedigrees
  • Formal presentation for AKC club status is sent to Club Relations for review and bylaw commentary to follow, if necessary.
  • Request to move into Miscellaneous submitted to AKC Board – date of entry January 1, or on or about July 1.
If a substantial nationwide interest and activity in the breed is demonstrated and the above criteria met, the information is presented to the AKC Board of Directors for consideration to compete in the Miscellaneous Class.

How long will it take for AKC recognition?
It is unknown at this time how long it will take until the Kromfohrlander is recognized and we are not in a hurry. The gene pool is shallow and limited. The Kromfohrlander is fortunate to be guided by an experienced and patient FSS breed founder. It takes some breeds 10, 20 or more years to get into AKC!

Why did it take so long for the Kromfohrlander to get in AKC FSS?
It can be a complicated task that almost requires either being an experienced breed fancier or having the guidance of one. The Kromi is now established with someone who has founded another breed in AKC FSS and has helped in the foundation of another breed.

How is the pandemic affecting the Kromfohrlander?
Unfortunately, the pandemic is likely to affect the Kromi's survival in America quite a bit. We have very few breedable dogs in our little population over here so far and of those, many are too closely related to breed together. We cannot travel to get new puppies and even if we could, breeding has slowed down immensely overseas, as well, as people over there also simplify their lives in order to get through this.
Breeders overseas understandably want to keep puppies close by for their own populations. Using artificial insemination is a possibility but again, it is not affordable (it is higher in cost than even traveling overseas to get a puppy).
So...we will do the best we can with what we have until acessibility improves.

My dog looks just like a Kromfohrlander so it must be one, right?
100% absolutely not. EVERY Kromfohrlander is known in North America (see map, below). None have been bred irresponsibly or ended up at shelters. Piebald is a common coat pattern that protects vital organs with a 'solar panel' action. Rough coat is expressed commonly in mixed breeds for survival purposes. You have a lucky mix!

How much do Kromfohrlanders cost?
Pricing puppies is one of the most difficult tasks a breeder needs to figure out.
A price will reflect the difficulty to obtain the breed, the difficulty in breeding them, the demand for puppies, health screenings, rearing and educational development and finally, the purpose of the puppy:

1) to be mainly a treasured family member or

2) to live in a home that not only loves their dogs as family members but also shows or does dog sports and is interesting in being involved in club activities, breed progress and establishment and has a proven track record in this arena.

...Plus all the other associated costs of having a litter.

Unfortunately, we have experienced nonparticipation of puppy buyers, despite well-meaning promises by the new owner and passionate explanations by the breeder that at the present time, new owners absolutely need to be involved and keep in touch and at least participate on the official breed group on Facebook (Kromfohrlander North America). It is the only way for Kromi owners to keep in touch and with this few in North America we really need to. When people duck out, the breed's survival in America is DAMAGED.

It is disappointing that this happens in North America, where the breed is so rare and fragile.

Depending on the economy, Kromfohrlanders range from eighteen hundred to twenty five hundred US.

What else?
The Kromi's foundation fanciers reflect decades of experience in breed rescue, exhibition, sports, breeding, health, training and behavior study in a wide variety of breeds and temperaments.
Some unrecorded Kromfohrlanders have been imported into the USA (and one to Canada) since 1997.
The breed did not start the procedure of breed recognition (through the American Kennel Club/AKC) until 2012 when the first foundation Kromfohrlanders were imported to the USA and recorded with AKC's Foundation Stock Service.
Some of those original dogs are not counted yet. If you or someone you know, has any knowledge of these 'uncounted' Kromfohrlanders (listed on this page), please contact us at the email shown below.

EVERY SINGLE Kromfohrlander that has come to North America is known and documented. Your lookalike mix is not a Kromi.

Thank you to all the European breeders and fanciers for their great record-keeping and for helping us locate every Kromfohrlander that has come to the USA since 1997. Every dog counts on the Kromi's path to recognition in America!
AKC counted dogs are noted with a number before their name. These dogs will be included in the official breed history for the Kromfohrlander in the USA.
